ABOUT THE FOUNDER
Sophie Elizabeth O'Brien
Hi, I'm Sophie, an aspiring future leader in science and technology policy. As a nationally competitive Lincoln-Douglas debater, I have a passion for both academics and advocacy. With a strong academic interest in the interdisciplinary field of Materials Science, and a particular fascination with the emerging field of Bioinspired Materials Science, I am driven by a desire to create more sustainable solutions for modern day technology.
My interests extend beyond research. As the founder and president of Hunter 4 Bright Futures, I am dedicated to promoting education equity for underprivileged children. Through fundraising and charity work, I aim to make a tangible impact in the lives of children, and inspire future generations to pursue their passions.
I hope to combine my passion for science and technology, along with advocacy skills honed from years of competitive debating, to help advance science and technology for the betterment of society someday.

Our lives are filled with materials. They make up everything from the things that we use, the clothes we wear, to the infrastructure of our cities. But many of the materials that modern society is built upon are now destroying our planet and we need to find solutions to this growing problem. Bioinspired material science has the potential to create new, environmentally-friendly materials based on nature’s templates. In this blog post, we’ll explain what bioinspired material science is and show its potential in changing the materials that make up our word.
Plastic is incredibly versatile–it’s lightweight, durable, and cheap to produce. It’s no wonder that it has become one of the most commonly used materials in society today. But plastic’s detrimental effects on the environment is no secret and it’s time to find an alternative. In this blog post, we’ll explain what plastic is and the bioinspired materials currently under production to replace it.
Lithium-ion batteries are secondary (rechargeable) batteries of unparalleled importance in today’s society. The lithium-ion battery has enabled a revolution in portable electronics and has created a rapidly growing market for energy storage that can help support the green economy. However, the manufacture of batteries is not without geopolitical and environmental problems. In this blog post, we explain the present technology of lithium-ion batteries and spotlight novel, innovative research being done to engineer a bioinspired battery (or rather a “Living Battery”) that is composed of the biological tools of nature to create a sustainable, efficient, and biodegradable alternative.
